Meanwhile somewhere in the USA in the 1860s...

Today we fought a large American Civil War game involving eight player (plus an umpire), 40 Union and 36 Confederate infantry regiments, a handful of cavalry regiments and eight batteries of artillery (all up about 1600 figures and 22 model guns).

I was far too heavily involved in the game at my end of the table to describe the action elsewhere in any detail other than to say that the Union forces were victorious and that my small division succeeded in turning the Confederate right after an extended fight in the large wooded area in front of me. So after the first couple if shots that show the initial deployments, the rest of the shots below just capture the acrion as it unfolded.

This kept us busy for a good six hours on a showery spring day.

  1. A great looking game Mark, shame I missed it again! It looked like the Rebs had a hard task, assaulting all those Blue bellies behind the fences. Who were you fighting at your end...JB??

    1. No I fought BR and it was a hard task to winkle him out of the woods. JB was at the far end of the table and I didn’t venture up that far too often.

  2. Wow! Impressive sight. You and your group do nothing by half measure. Buildings and terrain are superb. Are these all your handiwork, Mark?

    1. Thank you Jonathan. The buildings are my design that were cast in resin when I was involved in Military Miniatures some 20 year ago, but they were assembled into those set by another player. He also made use of some mis-cast items to construct some variants.

  4. Mark, that's simply spectacular and a joy to behold! I'm sure you all had fun and great to see the brave Union boys being triumphant:)

    1. It was spectacular! And yes we defenders of the Union were victorious, but they nearly had us at one point.

  5. Well played sir! What rules were you using?

    1. The rules are house rules and are on the blog under ‘Free Stuff’, although I have not updated the version recently.

  6. Lovely stuff and it sounds like you were thoroughly absorbed in it. At least you managed to get full photo documentation of the entire battle, which is more than I remember to do.

    1. Actually our end of the table was quite civilized. The centre right was intense and confused. I did miss taking some images in the middle of the game though.

  8. Another great looking game Mark...
I continue to be envious of your opportunity to have big games... hopefully we will be doing the same here sooner rather than later....

    All the best. Aly

    1. I feel your frustration...we were only briefly locked down and we missed perhaps five or six of our regular games and that was bad enough, but you chaps have probably not been able to game face to face for nine months...I don’t know how I would handle that.
