Chasseurs à Cheval de la Garde Impériale

Arguably the most famous of all the Garde cavalry this is a fabulous set from Victrix - a right royal pain in the butt to assemble, but full of action, charging at full tilt.

I was a bit daunted by the thought of painting this unit because its uniform looked so complex with all that braid in the dolman and pelisse, but in the end it was relatively straightforward and much simpler than the Dutch Lancers.

This will complete the cavalry brigade that will accompany my Garde.

The three generals that will command the Garde are on the painting table now. When they are done I think a parade will be in order.

  1. Beautiful work, Mark. The red pelisses trimmed yellow makes these famous fellows pop.

  2. Beautiful work Mark. All that aurore and yellow is not easy to do. They do look as though they would have been fiddly to put together.

    1. Thanks Lawrence. They certainly had a few parts, from memory the officer figure had 11 parts!

  4. I think they are probably worth the effort Mark, but I do not envy you - I have enough trouble with three or four parts for the Warlord AWI infantry (somehow, the Perry ones don't seem so bad, even though they have a similar number of parts to add!)

    1. Yes I am pleased with these. There is something very practical about the Perry plastics that makes them so much easier to work with.

    2. Victrix kits certainly have numerous parts to assemble but this result seems worth it. Such animation! You did a wonderful job of brushwork. Parade yes, please!

    3. Sometimes I think it is important to assemble some Victrix figures to appreciate just how easy some other sets really are. I don't usually have units as highly animated as these.

  5. Fantastic work Mark, hussars are a special nightmare for wargame painters as I know only too well with my Bavarians - never again! These are just great with incredible detail, I wish I had your skill.

    1. Thanks Chris. I am a bit of a hussar-aholoc with some 23 hussar units in my collections. I have done a few Bavarians on my time too!

  6. Worth it in the end as they look suitably grand. Nice job! Guys who look THIS GOOD will certainly avoid the curse of poor dice in the first game. 😀

    1. I think the trick to avoid the poor dice curse with pretty figures is to keep them in reserve, well out of the way!

  7. Cracking stuff Mark…
I was looking at these earlier on today while I was at Britcon…
There are indeed a fair number of bits.. but the results certainly seem worth the effort.

    All the best Aly

    1. Thanks Aly. The one part that had me really had me really asking "why" was the leopard's tail on the officers horse, but then I suppose it does look better floating free than moulded against the horse's body.
