Identified by its red fanion this is Commandant Mezerin's First Battalion, 77e Régiment de Ligne, the final battalion of the regiment.
For anyone interested in the weaponry of the Franco-Prussian War, Steve Shann (who wrote two Osprey Men at Arms books on the French armies in 1870-71 and has published several other wargaming books) is about to publish a work on the mitrailleuse, the details of which can be found here https://steve-nationsinarms.blogspot.com/2023/06/new-book.html
Meanwhile here is the whole of the 77e Régiment deployed.
Very nice! Don’t throw out the sprues - you can use spare arms and spare backpacks for Turcos! Paul G
ReplyDeleteThanks Paul. I am tempted with some Zouaves, but I had done a Turco unit earlier and do I need really need more that 40 infantry units...oh that is a dangerous question for me!
ReplyDelete"Need" is such a misunderstood word.
DeleteAnd often mis-used!
Deletelooking good , im almost done with the bavarians , shame wargame atlantic never relesed their Bavarians.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly would have been a low cost way to build some Bavarian units.
DeleteGreat work on these again Mark, the collection is gradually building.
ReplyDeleteThey will start to build rapidly from now on...I expect to have 13 battalions done by the end of July.
Delete13 battalions 😱
DeleteI’ll be luck if I’ve managed 13 figures at the rate I’m going 😂
Four battalions down now and one more by week's end.
DeleteExcellent! Wha is the red item wrapped over and around the officer?
ReplyDeleteThanks Jonathan. It is a blanket roll.
DeleteTo be pedantic, it's the red lining of a short coat carried by some officers. Officers could wear several different styles of coat, both regulation pattern and otherwise. One of the regulation garments was the "caban modele 1861", which had a red lining. Sometimes this was rolled up so as to show the red lining. Another way to paint it would be in the dark blue-grey of the standard greatcoat.
DeleteAnd in the next regiment I have started there is a mix of red and blue.
DeleteAnother lovely battalion and the regiment looks magnificent assembled together. Is a game on the horizon later in the year?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure there will be a game at some point...just waiting on some generals to be released.
DeleteA cracking looking unit Mark…
ReplyDeleteI am always impressed by your ability to stick lots of plastic toys together…something I really don’t enjoy doing.
All the best. Aly
Thanks Aly...glueing plastic bits is a wonderful task to be done when working from home and on one of those tedious conference calls!
DeleteStill looks like ACW Zouaves to me, so you know I like them. 😀
ReplyDeleteWell there will be a whole army so dressed soon...
DeleteLovely work as always and I'm learning nice bits of history too:).
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve, there will be another battalion to see tomorrow
DeleteSplendid looking battalion, I blink and you produce two units of infantry!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks Ian. Well you gave blinked again and there is another one finished now!
