First Battalion, 77e Régiment d'Infanterie

Identified by its red fanion this is Commandant Mezerin's First Battalion, 77e Régiment de Ligne, the final battalion of the regiment.

For anyone interested in the weaponry of the Franco-Prussian War, Steve Shann (who wrote two Osprey  Men at Arms books on the French armies in 1870-71 and has published several other wargaming books) is about to publish a work on the mitrailleuse, the details of which can be found here https://steve-nationsinarms.blogspot.com/2023/06/new-book.html

Meanwhile here is the whole of the 77e Régiment deployed.

  1. Very nice! Don’t throw out the sprues - you can use spare arms and spare backpacks for Turcos! Paul G

  2. Thanks Paul. I am tempted with some Zouaves, but I had done a Turco unit earlier and do I need really need more that 40 infantry units...oh that is a dangerous question for me!

    1. It certainly would have been a low cost way to build some Bavarian units.

    2. 13 battalions 😱
I’ll be luck if I’ve managed 13 figures at the rate I’m going 😂

    2. To be pedantic, it's the red lining of a short coat carried by some officers. Officers could wear several different styles of coat, both regulation pattern and otherwise. One of the regulation garments was the "caban modele 1861", which had a red lining. Sometimes this was rolled up so as to show the red lining. Another way to paint it would be in the dark blue-grey of the standard greatcoat.

    1. I'm sure there will be a game at some point...just waiting on some generals to be released.

  7. A cracking looking unit Mark…
I am always impressed by your ability to stick lots of plastic toys together…something I really don’t enjoy doing.

    All the best. Aly

    1. Thanks Aly...glueing plastic bits is a wonderful task to be done when working from home and on one of those tedious conference calls!
