Second Battalion, Regiment Froon, Number 54

Here is my second Austrian battalion, Second Battalion, Regiment Froon.

Since my last post on this regiment I have found a little more information about the regiment after the Napoleonic wars. It lost the title Froon in 1821 when Froon von Kirchrath died and it became Regiment Baron Grueber. Under this title it fought at Palestro, Magenta and Solferino in 1859. By 1879 it had a new inhaber, Franz Graf Thunder-Hohenstein. In 1908 and into the Great War it held the title Alt-Starhemberg.

And finally something we haven’t seen much of in the last six weeks in Auckland…that blue stuff above the houses in the picture below…clear sky on a sunny day.

  1. Another beautifully done battalion Mark and the pictures really show off your terrific work on the flagpole. Nice to see the sun return to Auckland.

    1. The flagpole terrified me, but thankfully only a small part is actually showing so it turned out to be quite easy up in the end.

  2. Great to see you finally have some sunny weather Mark and long may it continue given what you had all had to endure there. As always great work on those Austrians:).

    1. Thanks Steve. Three days of sun in row, although there was a bit of a shower at one point yesterday…could this be our summer?

  3. Nice work again Mark, the close up first image is particularly good, I think. I remember painting those red/yellow/black spirals on 20 battalions of Austrian flagpoles.....!
Sorry to disappoint - but it's been Autumn since 1 March! I see you had the yellow lid recycling bins out today as well - same day as ours in Pukekohe!

    1. Thanks Keith. I have only another seven poles to do for what I am intending as an Austrian force.

I have not given up on summer yet because, despite what radio and television presenters like to say, the actual change of seasons is marked by the solstice and equinox. So we are still in summer until 21 March!
