The British AWI Contingent Continues to Expand

While in the last few months my postings have been somewhat erratic, as I have explained in earlier posts it is because a major yet to be disclosed project has been in progress for our annual week of gaming at Lake Tarawera. This has been no small project, counting 16 large terrain pieces, 30 buildings and about 50 smaller terrain pieces, plus 35 mounted and 616 foot figures…and I have only painted one of the two forces involved. Our COVID lockdown has helped speed up the completion and knocked about three weeks off the project timeline.

Sadly Tarawera Week has been cancelled this year but the project has been completed, although it will remain undisclosed for now in the belief that the Tarawera event will eventuate in the New Year. But the suspension of that project has me working on the AWI British and the addition of this the 63rd Regiment of Foot.

Next off the production line is the 49th Foot, another unit with green facings,  but will be in a different pose.

  1. More splendid stuff, I really like the base frontage for these guys, an excellent look of mass.

    1. Thank you Norm. We use this sort of frontage, 15mm per front prank figure, for most of our armies and you are correct it gives a good mass. Oddly it is the same frontage we have used since the 1970s and is based on the WRG Horse and Musket rules that were in vogue at the time.

  3. Great work Mark. I am still stuck on the 15mm per figures frontage as I think it looks more like a formed line to me, as opposed to wider spacing which can look a little like skirmish order to me at times.

    1. I couldn’t agree more. Given that throughout the period 1700-1870 infantry drills defined the space allocated for each file between 22 and 30 inches there should be mass. I would rather have a smaller unit than spread the figures out.

  5. Great looking unit, it seems you are doing casualty figures to match? The green really pops.

  6. Yet more great looking Redcoats. Too bad about the cancelation of your annual wargaming week. That must be a heavy blow.

    1. Thank you Jonathan. Yes the cancellation is a disappointment but given our current lockdown it would probably have been lost anyway. I am hopeful for early next year.
