Today saw the completion of the first of the Great Paraguayan War Cavalry.
This one is a regiment of Brazilian line cavalry.
A second line regiment and a regiment of lancers will join them before the project is completed.
Next on the production line is the first of five Paraguayan cavalry units.
Terrific cavalry there Mark. A very fine Brazilian line (I'm sorry, I couldn't help it). Five Paraguayan units sounds like a decent number and is a bit surprising to me as I envisaged this conflict as being primarily foot and artillery with just a smattering of cavalry.
ReplyDeleteI was braced for the Brazilian comments! Surprisingly by the time that the Paraguayans declared war with Argentina they had 38 infantry battalions and 29 cavalry regiments in service. While many of those regiments fought dismounted, there were several good sized mounted cavalry engagements. The ratios were less in the other nations, but there were cavalry brigades and divisions in service.
DeleteGorgeous cavalry Mark, and beautiful palm trees btw!
ReplyDeleteThanks Phil. There are another 30 palm trees waiting to be based.
DeleteVery nice Mark! All the figures have nice and dynamic poses and the flag really makes the unit pop:)
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve. The Paraguayans are equally dynamic and with even greater variety.
DeleteI love them,Mark! These troopers could double as French Chasseurs d’ Afrique, I think.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jonathan. They might suit Chasseurs d’Afrique for late 19th Century North African conflicts, but I think for most earlier campaigns they would need a shako and boots.
DeleteVery nice cavalry Mark - I actually posted about two hours ago but I thought Blogger had done something weird ...its not possible to tell though, as comments have to await your moderation before they can be viewed. My comment was that your horses certainly look a lot nicer than the ones I have been painting and blogging recently...although Lawrence has said he thinks they look ok...
ReplyDeleteThese were actually quite difficult to do because the uniform is so plain. It is not until literally the very last colour that they come alive. The three horses that come with this set vary in poses from the standard found in most Perry sets.
DeleteVery nice Mark...
ReplyDeleteThey should contrast nicely with the more colourful Paraguayans...
All the best. Aly
Thanks Aly..Indeed they do contrast well...I have finished the first three Paraguayan figures.
DeleteThey look fantastic. Makes me almost wish I would game in 28mm but I already have a 10mm collection for this war. But I'm really enjoying your painting and can't wait for an AAR someday!
ReplyDeleteSomeday being the operative term! I still need to balance the infantry forces a bit more, then await the release of the generals and artillery. The first actions probably won’t occur until 2021...which isn’t that far away when you think of it.
DeleteLovely looking Brazilian cavalry unit and nice flag!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks Iain. The flag is straight off the Perry site.
