Half Yearly Review

As June ticks over into July I find myself looking back over the last six months as I do every year to check my painting and gaming progress. I know that some people struggle with this analytical approach, but I find it particularly useful to balance the expenditure budget.

The year began with a hiss and a roar with significant work on the French Revolutionary project, the Crimean War Turks and British expansion, and the ACW expansion. It also saw the dipping of the toe in water for the Great Paraguayan War.

Then the dreaded virus hit and purchases were put on hold in part because of the uncertainty of supply and in part because working in a vulnerable sector as I do employment was thrown into doubt. The result of this was that without a supply of new product I was forced to fall back on my rainy day stock - the 200 plastic ACW figures that were purchased to fill in the gaps between orders.

So to the results. Seven projects have been undertaken, three of which, the Crimean Turks, French and British, are completed. The French Revolutionary force will be one of those “add to when I feel like it” projects. The ACW project is nearing its end and the Paraguayan War project is about to take off.

So to the statistics...

Although the numbers fall below those from last year’s half year review they are probably a little higher than I was expecting...given that my intention this year was to focus more on gaming than collecting. But then again the number of games played is about half the expected number.

What can be expected in the next six months? Hopefully a bunch more games to start with. Then will follow the Paraguayan War, especially since the Perrys have just released the first of the cavalry. And I am very tempted by the Bavarians for 1866 that are due from NorthStar.

  1. As always, Mark, very impressive output. Great job! I especially look forward to seeing Paraguayan Wars' figures and Crimean War French.

    1. Thanks Jonathan. The French Crimean project was just a few cavalry additions to the existing forces...topping up the units to make a two per stand base a three per stand.

I have two half completed battalions of Paraguayan infantry that have been sitting on the painting desk since March awaiting reinforcements. Those reinforcements are enroute from Nottingham now, but in this odd COVID world when they will arrive is anyone’s guess!

  2. That seems like a very healthy return to me Mark. Over seven hundred figures in 28mm is a great achievement.

    1. I did reduce my productivity rate by about one third in the last 90 days and have reassessed some projects.

  3. Flutter, flutter, butterfly! Are the 1866 Bavarians significantly different to thr FPW version??

    1. Key differences are that they didn’t wear the helmet, the packs were different and they were armed with a muzzle loading rifled musket.

    2. Strange that they dumped the Raupenhelm and then went back to it later...the vagaries of military fashion I guess!
