Tarawera Week Day one.

The first day of our gaming week is over. It started little overcast, cool but not cold. After a hearty breakfast we walked up to the gaming room and started the first game, an American  Civil War game.

Three Union players, commanding a total of eight brigades, facing six Conferderate brigades.

The objective for each side was the domination of the two roads that ran either side of a broad ridge.

The Confederate planed to strike on their right and hold the rest of the line in front of the courthouse. The Union chose to fold the left and strike the centre.

In brief the Union left, struck by the main Confederate attack, buckled and collapsed, while the main Union attack stalled and eventually failed. On the Union right the Confederate attempted to turn the flank, but were turned back. Victory went to the South.

Below are a bunch of images in no particular order

    1. Thanks Aly, the problem for us Union boys was that many of out toys didn’t stay on the table for long.

    1. We started about 9:00 and finished around 4:30, with an hour for lunch, so about 6 hours, or a bit more.

  7. As one of the three Union players I can say that we suffered from a poor plan badly executed and suffered an overwhelming defeat although Mark managed to win his own seperate battle on our right flank!

    1. I agree, we should have defended with the left and struck with the right!

    2. Which is basically what rick said as soon as he arrived.....pity he wasn't so prescient when present from the start of a game!

    3. But we nearly pushed through on the right at one point, then they scored the initiative and turned us back.
