Landwehr Battalion, Erzherzog Karl Regiment No 3

To avoid the tedium of painting two large Austrian infantry units in white  I switched to the landwehr battalion of the regiment.

This is an under strength unit at 24 figures that uses the Victrix command figures for some variety.

Also slipping off the painting table is this chap...a Russian Mounted Jäger officer...who had been sitting around unfinished for several months. He should make a useful commander of a light cavalry brigade, or maybe an ADC.

  1. Nice work on these Mark - the Landwehr (and Grenzer's) are far more interesting to paint than the standard Austrian infantry!

    1. Sometimes I wish I had done the 1809 Austrians because the landwehr have a mix of greys, greens and browns...but I didn't...

  2. Good looking troops! You could paint a landwehr unit that was late in receiving the new uniforms. 😁

    1. Thanks Joe. I thought about that but four years after the change might be a bit of a stretch!

  3. That would be quite a relief after the all-white line, and a very pleasing combination of colours. Beautifully done Mark.

    1. It was a relief indeed. I have just completed a 36 figure battalion in white. A gun set is next then I am back into four 36 figure battalions in white in a row! Thankfully there are a couple of small building projects to complete for variety.

  4. Very nice work Mark, the Austrian Landwehr and Grenz certainly add something different to the army.

    1. Thanks Donnie. I like the jägers too, even if they are all dressed in grey.

    1. Thank you. I've always had a soft spot for the Austrians, but they never seem to do well in our games.

  7. These fellas look more smartly dressed than Landwehr deserve. Great job!

  8. Great work Mark! Your Landwehr look very nice indeed as is your Russian mounted Jager officer. It's hard to beat lovely Napoleonics and these are lovely.

  9. Those are lovely Mark, but I'd love to know who came up with such a weird hat design and the thinking, if any, behind it!

    1. Thanks Steve. Certainly an odd piece of headwear...my best guess is either a drunken mistake or the milliner was paid by the amount of material!
