Second Battalion, 5th Bavarian (Grand Duke of Hesse) Infantry Regiment

Well, after a fairly dry period the first storm of the year, former tropical cyclone Tam, swept in on Thursday night bringing gale force winds and heavy rain to northern New Zealand. A few trees in our neighbourhood were knocked about a bit, and there was some damage and surface flooding elsewhere in the city, but thankfully it was not widespread. There was a big thunderstorm on Friday night with spectacular lightening from about 9:00 PM to 3:00 AM.

Of course it has played havoc with Easter holiday plans - not that they affected us as we had our break last weekend with three days in Melbourne where it was sunny and 30 degrees C. However, the inclement weather has provided an excuse to work on hobbies.

Here is the Second Battalion, 5th Bavarian Infantry Regiment.

There is another battalion glued up and on the painting table, but before I start them I have a number of Prussian and French commanders to work on.

  1. Seeing all those colours on the weather chart was rather ominous, and glad it was not too bad where you were. Keith did mention he was kept up most of the night looking after the cat during the thunderstorm! Another fine regiment there and the bread bags (?) add a nice splash of warm colour to the predominant cool blue:).

    1. We are still getting the rain, but at least I have been able to get out for a walk between downpours!

  2. It's been a great long weekend in my book, Mark - weather is so dodgy, we have hardly left the house - so, as you say, lots of hobby time!
We were amused at work on Thursday by the randomly selected name of the latest storm, as one of my close colleagues is Tamara - but goes by Tam! :)

    1. It's been warm too with that Nor'easter. However, I do have a few things to finish off outside that were planned and I hate unfinished projects. Plus, I prefer to do hobby stuff in the evenings.

  4. Great work Mark, and some lovely hobby weather indeed. I saw the cyclone tracking down so that must be two in the past couple of years. I don't remember any in the ten or eleven years I lived in New Zealand. Good to see it was only surface flooding and a few trees down.

    1. Thanks Lawrence. It is late in the season for cyclones for us and in truth they are usually pretty weak by the time the get this far south of the equator. The last one came through in 2023. It is still threatening to rain again today - a dark sky with big thunder heads.

If only the weather was that colourful when you looked out the window…
We have just had grey and not so grey here…

    All the best. Aly

    1. Thanks Aly. I agree if only it was that colourful...it is grey again today, with a splash of sun now and then. At least the wind has died down.

  6. "Oh no, the weather is terrible, and I'm force to stay in and do hobbies..."
of course, I say that about all kinds of weather, not just the rainy kind. 😁

    1. Thanks Iain. The last few days have been much nicer, although yesterday's wind had a bite to it - enough to remind us that winter is not far away.
