Franco-Prussian War Commanders

Having waited a several years now for the Perrys to release some generals for their FPW range, I have taken matters into my own hands and created some commanders myself so that at least I can get the armies on the table.

With only a limited number of mounted figures that can be easily converted and lacking the patience required for any heavy converting, I have decided to do the command stands for the infantry brigades as foot figures. Each stand has an officer and an NCO. Here are the first groups:

Three French brigadier stands...there are three more to come.

The Brigadiers for the Prussian 27th Infantry Brigade...

...and for the 28th Infantry Brigade

The artillery commanders have been done as single figures.

The French - one officer for each of the  three divisional artillery groups and three for the Corps reserve.

The Prussians - one each for 27th and 28th Divisions and two for the Corps reserve.

The mounted officers for the divisional and corps command are in progress.

I know there will be many errors on the uniforms of these groups, but they will do for now. I guess that at some time someone will put out some proper commanders and I will buy them to replace these, but for now I can at least get these large armies on the gaming table at last!

    1. Thanks Jonathan. The other French are painted now and just need basing.

  2. Lovely work Mark. If there are any errors you must surely be able to put them down to campaign attire as they all look great to me.

  3. Nice work, they all look really good and good additions to your armies, can't comment about the uniform errors as I know very little about that but they certainly work for me!

  5. Well they do look rather good to my aged eyes Mark:)! A shame they haven't done any command figures, as you kind of need them for games...

  6. Hopefully no button counters respond to your post, Mark - these all look fine to me, and they are only required for "representational" purposes, anyway!

    1. It would be nice to have some proper figures though...especially some mounted brigadiers.

I'm gonna write them a strongly worded letter...😁

    Nice conversions!

    1. Exactly! It had gotten to a terrible state with dozens (hundreds actually) of plastic and metal soldiers wandering around without any leadership...it was making an awful mess in the house...

And if they help you get the toys on the table…Even better.

    All the best. Aly

    2. Take a look at Shako 64 Papal mounted officers and generals. I plan to use these on French command stands. Some of the Perry Latin American wars officers look very "French" and John Boadle has used them extensively for his command groups. (Though he is a very skilled converter),.

    3. Thanks Jonathon. I looked at those after I saw your comment on John's blog. John has done some beautiful work - although annoyingly he has made the generals for the Second Corps...which is the corps that I have created! I was considering the Shako 64 figures, but laziness kicked in and it was easier to just add some GPW figure to my last Perry order.
