American Civil War Rebasing

Well the rebasing of the Civil War armies is progressing well. The cavalry for both sides is completed, one brigade of four regiments each.


Also based is a brigade of five Confederate infantry regiments (with the VMI cadets front right).


I am really pleased with the result. Maybe over the Christmas break I will get them all finished and have a parade...or maybe even a game!

    Nice work Mark, they look great. Good for you having the dedication to rebase...I will never do it.....too many troops, too many bases!

      I wouldn’t rebase my entire ACW army that js for sure, but these ones were only ever temporarily tacked into rough card bases...as an experiment that didn’t quote work as I thought it might.

    Super basing composition. Why the differing number of troopers per base? I thought the standard was three.

      Thanks Jonathan. When I started this project I wanted to try to get away from a stand based game and instead work to a unit sized game. As such units were defined as tiny, small, standard and large. The original plan was to do these as a single stand, but it was too limiting on the table, I compromised and there is now a single stand for the small cavalry or tiny infantry units and two stands for others. Of course because the armies of other players in the group are based in a particular way I need to match the frontage, but it gives me the freedom to create my little vignette bases. I am not planning to do this for any of my other armies.

    Beautifully done Mark, and worth the extra effort and attention. Rebasing is something I have avoided to date, but when I see these it is something I might think about doing for one or two of the older armies.

    Very nice work there Mark. I've gone down the route of basing my 10mm figures on 1" bases, which means I can easily add or subtract a base to tweak the unit size as required. I just wish I'd done this with other figures years ago!

      Thanks Steve. I think for ACW in particular the varied sized units is important to getting the feel of the period.

    Rebasing is not my favourite thing ... but when the end result looks good... it’s well worth the effort.

      Thanks Aly. I am glad that I only tacked these lightly to their temporary stands otherwise the process would have been exceedingly tedious indeed. I hope you and your family are staying safe in these dark days in the UK.
