I have no evidence that any of the French cuirassier squadrons in 1870 were mounted in specific horse colours, but this 1887 Morot painting La Bataille de Reichshoffen, 6 aôut 1870 shows what appears to be two, maybe three, squadrons mounted predominantly on greys charging at Froeschwiller.
So for this, the third cuirassier regiment in my French FPW army, I have done with nine greys and three bays.
The fourth and final French cuirassier regiment has passed through the uniform store and is forming up ready to enter the parade ground.

nice Mark , i just bought some more 15mm french and prussians...
ReplyDeleteYou need some cuirassiers...😃
DeleteVery good looking figures. As always waiting to see them in action.
ReplyDeleteHopefully they will be in action in about three weeks.
DeleteThe famous French greys? Perhaps they had learned from the Scots. They do look rather magnificent and the horse colour provides them with something unique and distinctive. They are going to look great on the table and I hope they don't do anything silly like charge point blank across the face of an artillery battery.
ReplyDeleteNo one would do that would they? Mind you they did pretty much that in the real FPW battles...frontal assaults in the face of breechloading weapons.
DeleteThey look rather nice on their grey rides.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ray...I'm keen to see how they will do on the table.
DeleteVery smart looking troopers! And, you are back to showing up on my blog roll!
ReplyDeleteCuirassiers always look impressive regardless of which nation they represent! Yes I see I am back, but it was still 24 hours. I guess we will see with the next post.
DeleteThey look great Mark. My first ever unit of Airfix plastic cuirassiers were all on white horses, circa 1975!
ReplyDeleteAnd there is the irony...until the huge horse losses of 1812, the preference was for dark horses for cuirassiers.
DeleteLovely work Mark, the greys look really nice, cracking work.
ReplyDeleteThanks Donnie.
DeleteA cracking looking unit Mark…
ReplyDeleteI like the grey horses.
Massed cuirassiers are so impressive… you can never have enough 😁
All the best. Aly
Thanks Aly. I have completed the last regiment now and yes they look impressive en masse...will try to get them all in front of a camera today.
DeleteFine work and nice to have a bit of a mix on the horse colour front to break the unit up visually:).
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve. I don't usually like full units of greys, but I quite enjoyed these.
