First are the five new Mameluke units and the Delis (left rear)
Next are the eight new units of foot.
Then the full cavalry contingent...nine Mamelukes and the two light cavalry to the rear...

There are a few more items needed to complete this army - some commanders and some artillery - so watch this space.
Outstanding display of Muslim Might! Such a colorful army, it will brighten any dreary battlefield. Great job in pulling these together so quickly.

DeleteVery impressive Mark. Hopefully it won't be too long before you have them in action. It will be interesting to see how they will perform, and I imagine they will be quite a challenge to use effectively.

DeleteWhat a colourful change from standard Napoleonic armies! How far did those Ottomans/ Mamelukes actually fight regular armies? Sure the French 1800-ish and they were at war with Russia at one point, I think. Was there more to than that? You're the kind of wargamer who researches things!
ReplyDeleteThe Revolutionary French and the Russians were the primary opponents, although the Mamelukes only operated in Egypt snd Syria. I have read of skirmishes along the borders of the Austrian Empire, but I can't find anything about an all out conflict. They also fought to the east against the Persians who were French trained (there is a range available from Black Hussar Miniatures).
DeleteI looked it up, at least in terms of Turks vs Russians. They were at war from 1806-12, roughly in the areas of Rumania and Armenia. There seem to have been half a dozen field battles in the first area and one or two in the second. The Turks lose most, but not all. They always seem to outnumber the Russians a lot, or is that just by Russian accounts?
DeleteI have some sort of ancient memory of reading about the British fighting the Turks/ Mamelukes in Egypt around 1806 or something. One small battle?
And in that 1806-12 war Kutuzov commanded in the latter stages. I can't find a reference to a British battle with the Mamelukes but there was a revolt in Cairo in 1806 that saw the Mamelukes took temporary control. But five years later Muhammad Ali massacred them, destroying their influence in Egypt.
