Built in 1851 this simple log church was in the centre of Sherman's camp when the Confederates launched their surprise attack on Sunday 6 April 1862. Some of the most vicious fighting at the Battle of Shiloh raged around the church (I'm guessing there was no service held that Sunday).

| The rebuilt church on the modern day battlefield (the original was partly damaged in the battle and then later by souvenir hunters). |
It was a tough model to make (well, the actual construction was pretty easy really), but it is so simple that it quite a challenge to make it look interesting.
In the end it is the different wood tones, along with the fence and the foliage that lifts this above bland.
Now, putting my model in the place of the current church (from the first image).

Superb work, Mark!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jonathan. It came up nicely in the end.
DeleteThat’s another lovely looking building Mark…
ReplyDeleteAll the best. Aly
Thanks Aly.
DeleteLovely job, really well done.
ReplyDeleteThanks Donnie.
DeleteYou've captured the look of the timber, all right.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joe. There are six different shades of brown in that blend!
DeleteAnother lovely little building Mark.
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith...its bigger than you might think, and I have scaled it back.
DeleteCracking work there Mark and a good point about simple buildings often being harder to make look good, due to the overall bland nature of the design, finishes etc.
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve. It actually sat on the work table for a week while I tried to get some inspiration to finish it off.
DeleteYou definitely succeeded in making it look interesting Mark. It could have been quite an bland looking piece if you hadn't applied your touches, but it came out beautifully.
ReplyDeleteAs I said above, it took a lot of fiddling with brown tones to get it right, from a deep burnt sienna, through a very orange tone to the lightest tone. Its that depth that gives it some character, but not until the green flock went on did it come to life. I was quite despairing until then - I guess is shows that persistence pays off!
DeleteSpeaking as a Methodist, that's a good theme. That woodwork plus the finishing touches make it a work of art.

Thanks Stephen.
