More French Artillery

Returning to the French FPW army here are the two field batteries that will accompany Bataille's Second Infantry Division, Captain Bobet's 7th Battery, 5th Regiment and Captain Benoit's 8th Battery, 5th Regiment.

The  mitrailleuse battery that finishes the division's artillery complement is completed, but not yet based.

Nizam-i-cedid Anatolian nefer infantry

This post shows the third unit in the Ottoman expansion. It is a unit of Nizam-i-cedid Anatolian nefer infantry. I like these guys and their uniform even though a less kind observer made comments about them wearing half a watermelon on their heads.

I intend to do another five or six units of Ottoman infantry, maybe an Albanian regular unit, another Jannisary unit and then some Egyptian fellahin. But these will need to wait until after the next batch of red trousered Frenchmen (another 18 battalions of which arrived yesterday) are completed.

Finally, I drew these flags that are available here for free to anyone who has a need for them. They are vector drawings rendered to a high resolution .png output so should print cleanly at 100% scaling for 28mm. For 15mm a print scaling of 66% should be adequate....and no I have no idea what the Arabic text reads...I just used a few random glyphs from the font set.

Prussian Artillery, the Final Installment

This post shows not only the 3rd and 4th Heavy Batteries of the 2nd Field Division, 7th Field Artillery Regiment from the Corps Reserve...

...but also completes the whole of the artillery of VII Corps - all fourteen batteries with the divisions of the regiment right to left, First, Second, Third and Horse Divisions. Placed base to base like this the gun line has a frontage of 700mm.

For now, until the Perrys release some mounted generals, work on the Prussians is stopped.

Prussian Heavy Artillery

Today's post returns to the Prussians of the Franco-Prussian War and shows the 5th and 6th Heavy Batteries of the 3rd Field Division, 7th Field Artillery Regiment attached to the Thirteenth Infantry Division, Prussian VI Corps. These are the first of six heavy batteries that will complete the artillery of the Corps.

This heavy piece is a lovely model. It comes with the breech open and closed and I have done one of each here. I wish these has been available when I did the light batteries as the crew could have been mixed and matched to give greater variety, but they weren't.

Mamelukes

This is the first of several units of Ottoman cavalry that will be making their appearance in these pages. And what lovely figures these are. They are also and great value for money because with all their flowing capes, these are heavy figures (probably double the bulk of a standard figure), but are still sold at the usual price.

One of the standard bearer figures in the command set has a full caparison at is based on one taken as a prize at the Battle of the Pyramids and in is display in the Musee de l'Armee in Paris (below that I photographed in 2018). Such detailed work is far beyond my capability so I have simply painted mine red with a gold fringe. Observant readers will notice the return of lots of red pants...an unintended consequence of painting Mamelukes.

I really like these figures and am keen to do more.

Nizam-i-cedid infantry

In October 2018 I completed the last of five infantry and five cavalry units of an Ottoman contingent to support the British in Egypt (was it really that long ago). While it had been my intent to develop a full Ottoman Army that could stand alone against the French, the only manufacturer of Napoleonic Ottoman figures that I like were by a Brigade Games and as lovely as those figures are I was put off by their higher base cost, the weakness of the $NZ against the $US and the high postage rates from the US which makes these figures some of the most expensive to buy from this part of the world.

So when Alan Perry released the first packs of Ottoman infantry, I got excited because Perry figures are a much better economic equation for me. I even bought the Ottoman book from Caliver Books to get started, but my first figure purchase had to wait until the initial mass of red trousers Frenchmen was completed. So late August, with the last pair of the red trousers under the brush, I included two units of Nizam-i-cedid infantry and one of Malmuk cavalry in my order for the FPW artillery and cavalry that have been passing though these pages of late.

Here is the the first unit of Nizam-i-cedid infantry in the Boustanges hat.

The plan - be it a very fluid plan that will depend on forthcoming releases from the Perrys - is to add another five or six units each of foot and mounted, plus some artillery, which is enough to outnumber the French. If the range expands and covers the Ottoman army that fought the Russians then a slight expansion in that direction is possible too.
